Kleine Historie... / A little bit of history...

Zwischen April 1944 und April 1945 führte Leutnant Helmut Neumann als Staffelkapitän , ein Ass mit 62 Luftsiegen die 14./JG 5, der zum Ende des Krieges zum Galland Circus, der Jetstaffel des JV 44 transferiert wurde.

Verantwortlich für die Luftverteidigung des südlichen Teils von Norwegen (Trondheim, Bergen) seid Sommer 1944 verlegte die IV. Gruppe des JG 5 und damit die 14. Staffel zur "Arktischen Front" im August und September 1944.

Die Piloten der Staffel hatten maßgeblichen Anteil am Erfolg der Luftwaffe in einer der letzten großen Luftschlachten am 9. Oktober 1944 bei der sowjetischen Offensive gegen Petsamo (Finnland). Am Ende des Tages meldete die III. und IV. Gruppe insgesamt 85 Abschüsse sowjetischer Bomber und Jäger, bei nur einem einzigen deutschen Verlust. Unter den Siegen war der 3000. Abschuss des Jagdgeschwaders 5 "Eismeer"!

Im November 1944 verlegte die IV./JG 5 wieder zurück nach Südnorwegen. Bis zum Ende des Krieges beteiligten sich die Einsatzkräfte bei der Abwehr der alliierten Angriffe auf deutsche Ziele vorwiegend gegen die U-Boot Häfen in Trondheim und Bergen. Da Norwegen kein primäres Ziel für alliierte Lufteinsätze war, blieben die Feindkontakte selten.

Between April 1944 and April 1945 14./JG 5 was led by Leutnant Helmut Neumann, an expert with 62 aerial victories, who at the end of the war was transferred to Jet Squad of JV 44. Having been responsible for the air defence of the southern part of Norway, since the summer of 1944, IV./JG 5 - and with it, the 14.Staffel - was transferred to the "Arctic-Front" in August/September 1944.

The pilots in this Echelon, joined the big air-battle on October 9, 1944 in connection with the final Soviet offensive against Petsamo (Finland). This was the last big success for the German fighters. When the day was over, III. and IV./JG 5 claimed 85 Soviet aircraft shot down - among them the 3,000^nd victory for the Jagdgeschwader 5 "Eismeer" - against the loss of only one German fighter pilot.

In November 1944, IV./JG 5 was sent back to southern Norway. Up to the end of the war, this unit joined the German air-defence against the Allied air raids on targets in Norway - mostly the submarine - bunkers in Trondheim and Bergen. Norway was not exactly a priority target for the Allied air offensive and the fighter contacts were few.

Eine schöne Bf-109 G14 der 10./JG 5 stationiert in Kjevik und Gossen, Norwegen bis Mai 1945. Tarnschema in RLM 74,75,76 mit schwarz-gelbem Reichsverteidigungsband und seit Ende Februar mit dem Eismeer Wappen auf der linken seitlichen Fläche der Motorhaube und dem schwarzen Kreismarkierung der 10. Staffel der III. Gruppe.

A very nice Bf-109 G14 of the 10^th Fighter Wing of JG 5 based at Kjevik and Gossen, Norway till May 1945. Paint scheme in RLM 74, 75, 76 with black-yellow RVT-Ribbon and the End of February introduced Eismeer Code of Arms on the left side of the hood together with the black circle of the 10^th Fighter Wing of the III. Group.

Tarnschema in RLM 74,75,76 mit schwarz-gelbem Reichsverteidigungsband jedoch ohne Eismeer Wappen mit der Welle als Zeichen der IV. Gruppe und in weißer Staffelfarbe zur Farbkennzeichnung von Flugzeugen der 13./JG 5.

Eine der Bf-109 G14 der 16./JG 5 stationiert in Stavanger-Sola, Norwegen bis Mai 1945. Diese Maschine hatte ein sehr interessantes persönliches Wappen "Kölle alaaf", ein Faschingsgruß aus der Stadt Köln im Rheinland zusammen mit dem Stadtwappen! Die Tarnung basierte auch hier auf RLM 74, 75, 76 mit der blauen Welle als Kennzeichen der 16. Staffel der IV. Gruppe des JG 5.

One of the nice Bf-109 G14 belonging the 16^th Fighter Wing of JG 5 based at Stavanger-Sola, Norway till May 1945. This plane sports a very nice personal emblem with the code of arms from the city of Cologne in Germany's Rhineland and the saying "Kölle alaaf", which is a used during the carnival period in Germany, especially here from Cologne! Camouflage based on RLM 74, 75, 76 with the blue wave marking of the 16^th Fighter wing belonging to the IV. Group of JG 5.
